UNIVERSAL UNDERWRITERS: DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR DATA IS?

Computer hacker

Creep alert: CAP keeps dealers legal.

February 12, 2006—Do you know the last time an intruder tried to attack your computer network? Did you know that having a firewall isn’t enough to comply with federal data-security laws? And that you can be fined $11,000 for each violation of those laws?

Universal Underwriters offers the new Compliance Action  Plan (CAP) to keep dealers on the legal side of the FTC’s Safeguards and Privacy rules, which require that financial institutions–including dealerships–take steps to ensure that their customers’ personal info stays in the right hands. Dealers answer a series of questions to determine if they have fulfilled all of the federal requirements. (For example, have you conducted and documented a risk assessment survey?) Answering no to any of the questions means there’s more work to be done. CAP can advise dealers what steps to take next. Dealers can also have a Universal rep give an on-site walk-through to assess the dealership’s compliance.
